Colesevelam, colestipol and colestyramine increases the binding of bile acids in the
intestine, interfering with its absorption, as a result of which demand for
bile acids increases for which cholesterol is converted to bile acid in the
presence of 17 α hydroxylase, this causes increased demand of cholesterol in
the liver cells, this increases the activity of HMG-CoA reductase which increases
hepatic LDL receptors sensitivity, thus decreases serum LDL cholesterol.
